Cities grow upward, yet they are built from horizontal blocks. The PALKA PALKA typeface emerged from the idea of representing the city through vertical forms while reducing horizontals to the simplest and smallest possible module. In this way, PALKA PALKA grows horizontally while being constructed from vertical elements. With PALKA PALKA, I sought to express the idea that just as a typeface made entirely of vertical strokes becomes unreadable, a city made up solely of skyscrapers cannot truly be “read” — let alone lived in.
